During 2018-19, the number of fraudulent transactions taking place through debit and credit cards, internet banking and ATM transactions has been recorded to be 921. The Reserve Bank of India reported that the average loss caused due to debit and credit card fraud cases are more than Rs. 1 Lakh.



A cardholder has to be aware of the different ways how such fraudulent transactions can occur to stay protected from them. There are also certain steps which are needed to be taken immediately when his/her credit cards get stolen or misplaced.

There are several ways to avoid being a sufferer of fraudulent transactions. The ways are-

  • Be careful while transacting in an ATM counter. Report the bank authorities if you find any devices attached to the card slot.
  • Check if the cashier is taking too long to return your credit card while processing a transaction.
  • Buy a card protection plan which can financially protect you if your credit cards get stolen or lost.
  • If you own multiple credit cards, keep the ones you rarely use at home instead of carrying it everywhere.
  • Sign at the back of your credit card as soon as you receive it.
  • Check your CIBIL report after every 6 months to spot any discrepancy or fraud.
  • Go through credit card statements properly.
