Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone brands in the world. In India, it was the first brand to pose a serious challenge to Samsung’s dominance - and eventually replaced Samsung as the smartphone maker with the largest market share. In 2019, Xiaomi also became the youngest company to break into the Fortune 500. In 2020, Xiaomi plans to continue its great run by introducing ISRO’s NavIC system in its upcoming mobile phones.
Primarily, ISRO’s NavIC system(Navigation India Constellation) will serve the following two goals:
- Strategic: The foremost use of NavIC will be for defense. In the Kargil War, India faced a huge setback when the USA refused to share data from its Global Positioning System(GPS.) Therefore, with NavIC, India will achieve self-reliability when it comes to strategic navigation. ISRO has placed 7 satellites in place over the Indian mainland, and they are ready to map the whole of the Indian territory, as well as 1500 kilometers of ocean around the Indian mainland.
- Civilian: ISRO has made NavIC available for civilian use as well. In India, ancient walled cities stand next to modern skyscrapers. On the road, this creates a complicated grid that can get difficult to wade through for drivers, delivery men, and others. Further, the American GPS system is only accurate up to 20 meters - NavIC is accurate up to 10 meters. Therefore phone-makers have decided to make their devices compatible with NavIC - and Xiaomi is leading the pack.
Redmi Note 9, a xiaomi upcoming phone in 2020 will be compatible with NavIC. Qualcomm, the chips manufacturing giant that makes the globally used Snapdragon processing chips, has also announced that it will roll out compatibility with NavIC to its other chips in 2020 through a software update. This suggests that even budget smartphones, including, mi mobiles under 10000, might have NavIC compatibility in the second half of this year.
